The Short Take

Come for

Country roads, farm stands, cold lakes and very good wine.

Best for

Groups who like their weekends a little outdoorsy.

Ideal length

2–3 nights.

Best months

June–October. Harvest is the show.

Why this weekend

New England, better wine.

An hour east of Montreal, the Townships look like New England with a wine list — Loyalist villages, round barns, lake towns. Quebec's vineyards grew up here, and the local wine trail now strings together twenty-odd wineries along back roads made for a slow afternoon. Add the province's best Nordic spas and inns that take dinner seriously, and you get the anti-city weekend: nothing to line up for, nowhere to be, and a long table waiting at the end of the day.

Local intelligence

The lay of the land.

Hand-drawn map of the Eastern Townships: Dunham, Knowlton, Magog-Orford and North Hatley among vineyards, lakes and Mont Orford, an hour east of Montreal

The four stops

Dunham — an hour and change east; where the vineyards cluster.

Knowlton — 75 minutes; storybook Anglo village on Lac Brome — boutiques, antiques, cafés.

Magog–Orford — 90 minutes; the lake and the mountain. Spa density.

North Hatley — a scenic 1¾ hours; the prettiest village — come for a long lunch, stay for the porch.

Country roads hit different.
